Don’t you just wish there were more hours in the day? 😔 This is something I hear time and time again from the beautiful women I work with!

I know when I first started my business, I used to have a to-do list a mile long that I could never seem to get on top of 😓

Tie that into having a business, my own wellness, a social life and rest and well…

That’s when burnout 🔥 happened!

So, I thought to help save you from the same fate, I would share some of my favourite productivity hacks to help you get more done, in less time! 😍

TOP 3 PRODUCTIVITY HACKS

1️⃣ Journal + Plan Out Your Day (first thing in the morning or the night before)

⏰ TIME BLOCKING: break your tasks into groups and allocate a block of time to get the tasks done, this may look like inboxes, client time, exercise, course work etc

❓ REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS: starting your day in reflection to see what’s been working and what needs to be changed means you’re less likely to repeat the same mistakes and therefore save time

🤟🏽 POWER OF 3: choose THREE things that you are focused on that day, anymore is just a bonus, the more you try and take on the more overwhelmed and disappointed you get when you don’t get it all done ☺️

2️⃣ Use the first hour of your morning as your POWER HOUR 👊🏽

Your brain 🧠 is in theta state for the first hour you wake up, meaning brain function is optimised, so include some sort of…

MINDFULNESS 🧘🏼‍♀️ , MOVEMENT 🏃🏼‍♀️and MEAL 🍳 to help start your day on a positive note, with great circulation and blood flow, as well as balanced hormones and energy to keep you as focused as possible!

3️⃣ Prioritise Your Health!

This is a big one! Your health is your wealth… and without it you can say goodbye to your productivity, energy and ability to thrive in your workplace.

So keep it simple but effective! 👌🏽

☑️ Sleep for 7 - 9 hours a night to wake up fresh the next day

☑️ Drink 2 - 3L of water to keep you hydrated (our bodies are 70% water)

☑️ Listen to your body and learn to sync your work to your hormonal cycle (it’s a thing - I promise).

5 Things To Prioritise For Optimal Health

I get asked all the time… How do I lose weight? How do I balance my hormones? How do I heal my gut? Honestly, it all starts HERE, with the 5 priorities I am about to share with you! This is your foundation to health… 

TOP 5 PRIORITIES

1. STRESS + SLEEP: 

Do not underestimate the impact stress has on your body, this can be food stress, emotional stress, physical stress, mental stress you name it. It triggers inflammation, can negatively impact your gut health and throw your hormones out of whack if you’re constantly producing tonnes of your stress hormone cortisol! 

Stress also has a massive impact on our sleep, which as you will know from experience, a poor night's sleep throws you off for the entire day, if not the entire week! Sleep is where we rest, repair, create long-term memories, and recover, in fact it is arguably THE most important thing we should be doing for our health as humans.

YET, we tend to be completely okay sacrificing it time and time again for more things that are creating stress in our life. A lack of sleep not only tells your body to store more fat, but also encourages you to overeat (and not the good stuff), you typically reach for quick fixes of energy - like sugar and caffeine! 

You have to be managing your stress and getting enough sleep, this is a NON-NEGOTIABLE for achieving your goals… focus on having set boundaries around your work hours, and getting 7 - 9 hours sleep EVERY single night!

2. SIMPLE WHOLE FOODS:

Forget diets, eat REAL food, you know, the stuff without an ingredients list (or a minimal one), your body knows what to do with it! Yup… if you can’t pronounce the ingredient, chances are your body doesn’t know how to use it and it provides no nutritional value.

In fact, REAL foods like your meat, poultry, fish, fruits and veggies do not even come with an ingredients list. These are the kinds of foods your diet should be rich in. When you look at your plate, you should be asking yourself, is that enough protein? Is that enough greens? What NUTRIENTS am I getting! 

Then once you know your nutrient intake is great, you can weave in things that are sometimes foods if you want to. It is about balance, but whole real foods should make up at least 80% of your diet.

3. SUPPORT + SELF-CARE:

Don’t expect yourself to know how to do everything or to do everything for everyone else. Self-care and support go hand in hand. This can literally look like asking for more help from the people around you…

Remember, how easily you say yes to everyone and want to support, well others love to help too. It is OKAY to ask for help and it is okay to receive it too! Sharing the load makes for a much happier environment and YOU! Also, make it a non-negotiable to have at least 5 minutes of YOU time daily and an hour a week if you can, doing something you love!

If you want to take your health to the next level, and aren’t sure to start, it is worth investing in yourself. I cannot tell you how much my health has been fast tracked through having the support and guidance from coaches.

4. STRENGTH TRAINING:

Ladies… LIFT! If you want to boost your metabolism, support optimal hormone production, and feel empowered, start moving some weights! I cannot stress this enough. No matter what age you are, this will support your health and well-being. 

And NO it isn’t going to make you bulky, in fact it will help lean you out, get your bones stronger and of course help you feel stronger and fitter within yourself! 

Remember… We all start somewhere, so if it's 1kg or 100kg, you got this! Join a gym, take part in a group fitness program, whatever it looks like, but start picking up some weight. It doesn’t have to replace your exercise currently, but see if it can become something you do 2 - 3 x a week. The results will speak for themselves!

5. SUPPLEMENTS:

This is NOT a one size fits all! Make sure you’re supporting your body with the nutrients that we can’t get enough of through food, or are being depleted by stress! Unfortunately, when it comes to supplements, you definitely want to be careful what you put in the body as not all supplements are created equal! 

The other side of the supplement equation is that they do play a very important role! Nowadays our soils aren’t being replenished with the nutrients they once were and this leads to deficiencies of nutrients in our food supply, like zinc, iodine and selenium! And if they aren’t in the soil then they aren’t in our food and then we can’t get them! 

So, I recommend that you speak to a qualified health-care provider (like myself) when choosing supplements so you aren’t just taking anything off the shelves!

How To Heal Your Relationship With Food Part Two

Ready? 

Here’s how to ditch the GUILT and REMOVE the emotional eating.

IMPORTANT STEPS TO HEALING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD

STEP ONE:

1️⃣ ACKNOWLEDGE - acknowledge that you ate the food (sound simple) but often we don’t eat this way in front of others, and try to hide it from ourselves too. 

Also, acknowledge the guilt. Name it, call it out. 

Let it show it’s face instead of just being a feeling that you’re trying to suppress. 

When we name the feeling, it has nowhere to hide and we can start to move past it (thanks @alyssanobriga - turns out this tip works for food too).

STEP TWO:

2️⃣ ACCEPT - accept that it happened, accept that you feel the guilt, you can’t change the past so let’s not let it ruin the present or inhibit our future. 

Feel where the guilt is present in the body, is it the stomach, the heart, the mind, the chest, the throat, feel into the presence of the emotion that it has brought up if it serves you. 

Take a few deep breaths into the guilt, keep breathing through it without judgement, and let it pass. 

3️⃣ LET GO - let go of the feeling, let the guilt pass, move on from it and show up for yourself in the way you want to be. 

For the next meal you are going to have, make it one that nourishes your body, fills you up with nutrients and is going to truly satisfy you. 

Let go of the judgement you placed on yourself, let go of the guilt and know that each meal, each moment is a chance to start to embody the you you want to become. 

Make your choices from this place, not a place of guilt or hatred towards yourself (I know, I’ve been there). 

FINALLY...

Please know, it’s not about ‘starting fresh’ or having ‘cheat meals’ these labels only make things worse. 

It’s like we are giving ourselves permission to binge out and do a disservice to our bodies, knowing we can ‘start fresh’ the next day. 

Go back to that question in part one… if you truly feel like that food, and you’ve checked with yourself there’s not another driving factor behind it… then ENJOY IT! 

It’s about eating well for you, where you’re at, and restriction often makes things worse! 

So, be kind to your body, after all, it is the one TRUE HOME you have!

Self-love, honestly, to me, used to be a giant fluff word… do these things to feel self-love, repeat your affirmations (blah, blah, blah) was literally all that was going on in my head. 

I told myself that I loved myself, but in reality, I never truly believed it. 

That reality was harsh to discover this year. I thought after overcoming my eating disorder, then I loved myself. Yet I still looked in the mirror and saw all the things that were still wrong with me (or found a bunch of new things, as we do). 

My self-love journey I can now see was and has always been a work in progress, and I continue to work on it to this day, but through this year having experienced coaching for extra support, reading plenty of personal development books, taken courses and supported clients… it has been beyond belief at what I have learnt about myself and the self-love work.

BREAKING IT DOWN

Let’s take any goal for instance, if you believe in yourself that you can do it, science shows you are far more likely to achieve it. However, if you don’t believe in yourself and constantly put yourself down, or doubt yourself, the likelihood of you achieving said goal gets lower and lower.

That makes sense right… but what does that have to do with self-love? 

Well, let’s take the goal of weight loss, you look in the mirror and tell yourself all the nasty things (you’re fat, you’re disgusting, how can anyone love you when you look like that, how could you let yourself get this way… the list goes on).

So from this place of negativity, you make the decision that you are going to lose some weight to feel better about yourself. So, you start exercising more regularly, eating better, but the mind is clever… 

It will see that your hard work isn’t instant, and you will keep feeling frustrated when the results don’t start taking shape in a week or so, AND your brain will start playing tricks on you.

You see, our subconscious mind is programmed to look for evidence of the things we believe and the stories we tell ourselves. So if your core belief or story is that you are fat and you need to lose weight, your brain will keep looking for how you are still fat and still need to lose weight (hence why eating disorders are largely to do with mental health). 

You are also taking action from a place of hatred, disgust or as a punishment, and again, the science shows this does not create long term change. We end up feeling defeated far sooner and give up a lot quicker and dive back into old habits, because you are essentially telling yourself you are not good enough the way you are so you must stick to ‘this diet’... and when you don’t, well I don’t have to tell you the rest of the story! 

So, what can you do about it? I’ve got some simple steps below that will help you get to a much happier place within yourself and begin to love yourself for YOU! The gorgeous human being that the Universe only created ONE of! 

HERE WE GO...

Awareness

Firstly, you need to be aware of your thoughts, how you talk to yourself, what stories you buy into on a regular basis about yourself. We repeat the same 80-90% of our thoughts on the daily, so take the time this week to bring attention to what they might be, I often get clients to write them down. 

Take note of how you react to your reflection or when someone gives you a compliment… Awareness is the first step to creating long-term change. 

Belief Work

Now that you have identified your thoughts, stories, how you receive compliments etc… It is time to work them at a subconscious level. This means, taking the time to go back into your past and reprogram these patterns that you picked up when you were younger. 

This is not a step I recommend doing on your own, I recommend getting a highly trained coach in this area (like myself) or if there is deeper trauma seeing a therapist. This truly is the work that will set you free… I am a living example of it!  

Forgiveness

Once you have done the belief work and are feeling lighter from your thoughts and subconscious programming, you are going to want to get to a place of acceptance with your body, yourself, wherever you are at… this is where forgiveness comes in!

We so often judge ourselves so harshly, for all we have thought, been, done in the past and this can be one of the biggest things that holds you back from moving forward and being in a place of true acceptance for all that you are! 

Write a letter of forgiveness to yourself, for all the judgements, mistakes etc and truly mean it. You did the best you knew how to at the time, it is time to move forward now, from a place of love. 

High 5 Habit

The beautiful @melrobbins wrote an amazing book this year called The High 5 Habit (please do give it a read if you want to go deeper on this)... this is probably THE MOST SIMPLE thing you can do, and has an AMAZING impact on your psychology and love of self! 

It is really as simple as high-fiving yourself every morning in the mirror. You don’t have to say anything, do anything differently, this simple action is powerful at reshaping the way you look at yourself for good. Don’t believe me… try the High 5 Habit - 5 Day Challenge - IT WORKS!! 

Self-care

Self-care is not a luxury, it is a NECESSITY!! I cannot tell you how many women tell me they don’t have time for self-care… honey, if you don’t make time, you are going to burnout and be useless to all those around you that are so used to you taking care of them! 

I say this all the time, but it is worth repeating! You cannot give from an empty cup, instead we must learn to give from the overflow! 

It doesn’t have to be a massage every week, or hours at the gym (although it might be), it gets to be whatever you want it to be, try taking just 5 minutes out of your day just for you… that is showing yourself that you are WORTH that time and love. It is transformative for your health on so many levels!

Knowledge, laughs, a conversation with a friend is one of the best ways I can describe listening to a podcast! I love listening to experts share their stories, connect with their audience and educate on such a deep level! 

My only disappointment when it comes to podcasts is that I didn’t start listening to them sooner! Not only do I no longer listen to the radio in my car, but if I am going anywhere longer than 10 minutes, I will pop one on… the nuggets of wisdom are amazing! 

There are too many epic episodes to list, but I do have my go to shows that I have loved over the years and below are my top shows for 2021! My advice, click on each and then scroll through the episodes that resonate.

MY TOP 10 PODCASTS

  • The BossBabe Podcast - Natalie Ellis + Danielle Canty

Experts on business, instagram and all things social media, these ladies have the most incredible experts on to share their knowledge, as well as fantastic solo episodes. This is my number one go-to when I get in the car. Not to mention they love their health and wellness so their guests are EPIC in this area too, including hormone experts such as Dr. Jolene Brighton and Alisa Vitti. 

  • On Purpose - Jay Shetty

Jay Shetty is such a breath of fresh air, if I am ever looking to lift my mood, shift my perspective, or learn something new about myself, this podcast always hits me with the feels and the science to back it up. Shetty’s style brings the personal to personal development and I am always excited by the guests he has on. My favourite episode to date is the one with Dr. Joe Dispenza. 

  • The Period Party - Nicole Jardim

Hormone expert and author of Fix Your Period, this incredible woman is another mentor of mine, and I cannot believe the value she brings to every episode. There is always so much to learn and Nicole is amazing at breaking things down, keeping them simple and giving you actionable steps to help you on your hormone journey (or in my case, help me help my clients). 

  • The Tony Robbins Podcast 

I started these podcasts right from the beginning, and to say they were LIFE CHANGING would be an understatement. Tony Robbins is one of my all time favourite human beings and it was listening to his podcasts that inspired me to go to his UPW event (which was even more life changing). If you are just getting started on your personal development journey, or are ready to take control of your life, give these a listen!

  • The Highest Self Podcast - Sahara Rose 

Sahara Rose brings such divine feminine beauty into my world whenever I get the opportunity to listen to her podcast, whether it is talking about Ayurvedic practices, business or embodying your inner Goddess, this podcast will empower you to embrace and become your highest self!  

  • Revolution Health Radio - Chris Kresser

Kresser’s podcast is one that follows my very same philosophy around health and well-being, and the guests are amazing experts in their respective fields. Chris’s philosophy around functional medicine is what got me so focused into researching to find the root cause, knowing there is always more than meets the eye and that treating symptoms alone is not the solution. 

  • Super Soul - Oprah Winfrey

A woman who needs no introduction, Oprah Winfrey is a force to be reckoned with, and these deeper soul level conversations often hit it at the heart, giving valuable insight and wisdom from her personal experiences as well as having some of the leading world experts share their knowledge. So much power and such amazing conversations - deep, healing personal development kind of podcast. 

  • The Doctor’s Farmacy - Dr. Mark Hyman

Another expert in the functional medicine space, Dr. Mark’s holistic approach to health is one I place in high regard. It is very science based, but super simple to understand and can really help answer some questions that you may be having in regards to your health, and has an awesome philosophy of using food as our medicine to heal.  

  • Dr. Ruscio Radio - Dr. Michael Ruscio

Author of Happy Gut, Happy You - one of my all time favourite gut health books, this functional medicine doctor gets deep into the science and testing when it comes to healing on a physical level. They are definitely deep dives into specific topics so it pays to have a scroll through to discover which episodes are going to be most relevant to you or that spike your curiosity to learn. 

  •  The School of Greatness - Lewis Howes

Another incredible author, Lewis Howes, brings a different vibe to personal development, focusing on mindset, wellness and overall success. There are literally over 1000 episodes to dive into and the topics are super fascinating. I am constantly amazed by just how incredible humans are and what can happen when our mind is in the right space to thrive! 

MY TAKEAWAY

Podcasts are amazing, I always walk away having learnt at least one new thing, and it is such a gift to have access to these incredible minds in our pockets right now, so make the most of it, soak up the knowledge, and even more importantly APPLY it. That is where the TRUE magic happens!

HOW GUT HEALTH IMPACTS YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

It’s becoming common knowledge that your gut is in fact your second brain… did you know they are actually made up of the same tissue! That is one of the reasons why they communicate so effectively! 

Have you ever had that feeling where you just know in your gut, that something is right, or wrong? That is both intuition and your little microbes and gut trying to communicate with you. 

It’s often strange when I first talk to clients about this, how little of an impact they are aware of their food on their mood, yet after a few weeks in, it is one of the biggest changes they witness… not only their moods, but their overall mindset has lifted! 

Our gut is home to trillions (let me say that again… TRILLIONS 1,000,000,000,000… yes that many zeros of microbes! Little organisms that you are playing host to inside of your gut. Isn’t it just crazy when you think about it. That is more microbes than human cells. It is no wonder they have such an impact on our health.

HOW GUT HEALTH & MENTAL HEALTH ARE LINKED

Hippocrates said around 2500 years ago, that ‘ALL DISEASE BEGINS IN THE GUT’ and in my humble opinion he wasn’t wrong, nor was he just talking about physical disease either. Mental health is a disease that is becoming more widespread, particularly in the last 18 months… The state of the world has fast tracked this for a huge number of people. 

During the lockdowns in Europe, medications for anxiety and depression went up by around 70%, suicide rates skyrocketed, and EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE felt the impact that this pandemic has had on their mental state. 

It is Mental Health Awareness Week here in New Zealand, and it is of the utmost importance that we start to bring more and more attention to this as a growing pandemic of it’s own. 

One of the key ways to support our mental health that often surprises people is actually through our food, and supporting our microbiome (gut environment), as this is where 95% of our serotonin is produced (your happiness hormone). 

In all honesty, to think the two are unrelated would be completely misguided! 

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR GUT HEALTH

When it comes to supporting our gut health for our mental health, you want to focus on eating whole, real foods, the less processed the better (the bad bacteria LOVE sugar). You also want to include things that grow the good guys like a high quality probiotic - BePure and Just Thrive are two of my favourite brands when it comes to this! Probiotics are great at crowding the bad guys out, and supporting a repopulation of your microbiome. 

I actually have a number of my clients do a gut healing protocol to not only support the microbiome, but help with their mental health… this is inside my Reclaim Your Radiance Program, but I did create a 2 week reset for your gut health if you want to check it out here! 

I have had a number of clients come off their anxiety or depression medication as a result of healing their gut, but if this is you I advise you do so under supervision of a doctor and work with a holistic nutritionist. 

Also, it may sound strange, but to support both your mental health, and allow the gut to produce optimal levels of serotonin, do a bit of a dopamine detox! High levels of dopamine production (our addictive, to-do list hormone), depletes the production of serotonin. 

So try to stay away from screens for a day, or immerse yourself in nature, journal or meditate and get to a place of stillness to allow the body to recharge it’s serotonin stores! 

Finally, mental health is a battle, it is an illness, and often those struggling the most will not reach out for support, so please… check in on your friends and family, give smiles and hugs, share love and warmth, you never know just how much of a difference it makes.

THE POWER OF MEDITATION IN TRANSFORMING YOUR MINDSET

“Meditation allows us to change our brains, bodies and state of being” - Dr. Joe Dispenza (Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself)

It allows us to move from thinking to being, moving from our head into our hearts. 

A lot of you will already know the benefits of meditation, in terms of how it calms the body, reduces stress, and allows us to be more present. 

However, a lot of people really struggle with meditation, as we tend to have this idea of someone sitting cross-legged in a room full of candles and in complete silence with the mind quiet too. 

When it comes to meditation, it’s important to understand there is really no WRONG way of meditating, and if you are someone that struggles to keep your mind quiet during the practice, then it is completely normal, and try not beat yourself up about it. 

Remember it is just that… a PRACTICE, something you get better at over time.

HOW MEDITATION WORKS

The power of meditation lies in the wisdom that comes from getting still. Because in all honesty, how many times a day (aside from your sleep), are you really STILL? 

Our brains are exposed to around 42 GB of data a day (that is 42 trucks full from top to bottom of pages and pages of information) and our poor brain is now responsible for filtering in and out what is important to remember and keep and what to let go of. 

So, with the world so busy, it can be hard to find time to actually be present, especially with all the thoughts that consume our minds. Meditation is powerful because it allows us time to take a moment for ourselves and hear what needs to come through from our own internal guidance system. 

Believe it or not, you have innate wisdom inside of you, often referred to as intuition, or a gut feeling, and meditation can really help you learn to trust it, and when we can trust it more, listen to it more and operate from it more, we live our life more in alignment with our truth.

BENEFITS OF MEDITATION

Meditation is also a powerful time for self-reflection and observation, it is often talked about as the time where we become the observers of our own mind. Removing our identification with our thoughts, and actually seeing the birds eye view of what is truly going on in our lives and any given situation. 

In this instance, with good practice we can enter the subconscious mind, from being to observing our thoughts… from this place we can reprogram our mind, beliefs and brain. If you are interested in learning the science behind this I strongly recommend reading Dr. Joe Dispenza’s book - Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

However, if you are someone that struggles to even have a ‘quiet mind’ or get still, or simply new to meditation, here’s one of my favourite tips: 

Before meditation it can pay to journal or write down all the things that are taking up space in your thoughts to give you more space to just simply be. 

It is also important to note the key times for meditation are when your brain is in what’s called a theta state. This is most easily accessed first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening which is when I do recommend doing your daily practice. 

Another thing that I have found and know to be really effective to use as part of your meditative practice is setting an intention of what you want clarity on, or want out of doing the mediation. 

If you just pause now, and think about what you are hoping to get out of the meditative practice - peace, stillness, gratitude, calmness, presence whatever it is, just close your eyes and bring it to your mind… and set your intention for your practice.
