DETOX CRANBERRY GUMMIES RECIPE

Yields: 30 - 40 gummies

Detox time can often suck, you feel super restricted, there’s only so much you can do to make the food taste good, especially when you’re on the liver detox I do where there’s no salt! Whaaaatt!!

Often the thing I find the hardest is not having something to chew or sink my teeth into, and sometimes I just crave a little something after dinner, so when I had the idea to create little healthy gummy lollies I was so excited!

I actually tried and failed a number of times with this, but I am so pleased I persevered!

I chose cranberry juice in particular because it is something I am drinking on my detox currently as it is an awesome diuretic (helping with fluid retention) which supports detoxification and pulls out the water stored in our fat.

Cranberries themselves are also supportive for our lymphatic system - helping with things like cellulite and breaking down fatty particles in our body due to the flavonoids and enzymes inside.

The important thing here is that we aren’t using a crappy high sugar supermarket cranberry juice, but one that is pure cranberry juice, not concentrate! I personally used Lakewood Farms Organic Pure Cranberry here in NZ, just be sure to check the ingredients and sugar content on yours if you choose to use it.

You can replace cranberry juice with any other juice (again keep in mind the sugar content), I have also tried with lemon juice which is a bit sour but yummy!

Side note: the gelatin is also amazing to support gut health and repair gut lining, so these gummies are a win win! Check out the recipe below :)

INGREDIENTS

-  1 cup cranberry juice (I used Lakewood Farms Pure Cranberry)
-  4 Tbsp. gelatin (I used the nutraorganics natural grassfed unflavoured)
-  3 Tbsp. stevia (you can use honey instead, I was just keeping the sugar way down)

METHOD (as adapted from @boobtofood)

  1. Add the cranberry juice to small - medium saucepan
  2. Sprinkle the gelatin over the juice (try spread it out evenly), and let it sit for a few minutes, this allows the gelatin to ‘bloom’
    **You will notice a wrinkled look forming on the surface as the liquid absorbs the gelatin
  3. Stir the mixture together
  4. Put on a low-medium heat and stir gently until the gelatin has dissolved for around 5 minutes
  5. In the last minute or so add the stevia (or honey) and make sure this is well mixed through
  6. Remove from heat and pour into silicone moulds (I got mine from @littlegiantsstore and found using a tear dropper helped massively too. Alternatively you can use a container as long as it lifts out easily.
  7. Pop in the fridge for 2+ hours for it to set
  8. Remove from moulds or cut them up (if in a container) and keep refrigerated for up to 14 days. Enjoy!

THESE 5 THINGS CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO PERIOD PAIN! Lemme explain how to reduce it!

First of all, let me start off by saying that period pain is COMMON but NOT NORMAL, and you don’t have to live with it, eliminating the following will help you alleviate the pain massively!

5 REASONS FOR PERIOD PAIN

1. Eating pro-inflammatory oils like canola oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil and other vegetable oils for example are all pro-inflammatory (and in a lot more foods than you’d think)

They contribute to period pain by increasing the omega 6 content in the body, which when out of ratio with omega 3 leads to increased inflammation and inflammation leads to period pain

2.  Stress - if you’ve been with me awhile now you’ll know this is HUGE for any kind of issue in the body, but particularly for period pain

The more stressed you are, the more inflammation it causes, it can then decrease magnesium levels which helps with cramping (think when your calf wakes you up in the middle of the night with a cramp)...

The uterus is a muscle so too much stress = more cramping

3. Drinking cold water, this might sound strange but I got a very big telling off from one of my Chinese clients who educated me (and then I did more research into Traditional Chinese Medicine on this)...

That one shouldn’t drink cold water on or around their period

Think about it this way, we are warm blooded animals, and the period is about blood flow, our blood flow decreases when we are cold and drinking cold water cools the body down.

For my clients I recommend for the second half of their cycle they drink warm water (except when exercising because that sucks), and they have seen massive differences in their menstrual health

4. Hormonal imbalance, now this can show up in a number of ways from high oestrogen, low progesterone, high androgens, you name it, but ultimately if you experience any PMS symptoms it’s worth digging a little deeper

Work with a functional medicine practitioner or health coach like myself to figure out what hormones are out of balance and start to remedy them with food, exercise and lifestyle changes.

5. Endometriosis/PCOS, these two conditions are hugely responsible for period pain and are often undiagnosed for so long!

If you’ve been struggling with chronic period pain, please go see a doctor and have yourself diagnosed or have these ruled out, there is so much we can do to help with both conditions once we know what we are dealing with!

Contrary to popular belief, achieving your goals isn’t just about working harder… In fact, it can be one of the reasons you’re getting stuck! Below I’m going to share with you what really is keeping you stuck and what kept me stuck in the hopes to bring some awareness and insight to how you can break free of the blocks that are keeping you playing small!

The blocks you are facing aren’t in the way, they are the way!”

This is something one of my amazing mentors @alyssanobriga says often, and I knew it at a conscious level, but I had never really felt it or understood it to the depth I feel I do now.

To put it simply, when you face adversity, or something in your life that triggers you, or you feel is stopping you from getting the desired result or feeling you want… this is your block.

MY BREAKTHROUGH

For so long, I would fight these blocks, continuing to try and go around them, or in all honesty, a lot of the time run away from (hello procrastination) haha! But when I actually looked deeper, I realised that there was a message, wisdom that was trying to be communicated. They say ‘everything in life happens for a reason’ and whilst that is true, I believe that we play a role in our own destiny and now this makes more sense to me as to why.

If we are resisting something we are only creating more resistance, this eventually leads to us creating a reality against this resistance, and therefore the reason that this happens. When we learn to embrace the block or the thing we are resisting instead of trying to fight it, it is actually the key to our freedom.

I’ll give you an example… I’ve always told myself the story or let myself believe that ‘I don’t have enough time’. Now without going into the metaphysical concept of the fact that time simply doesn’t exist and all we have is now, this story has always kept me stuck - a block.

When I got curious, I wanted to see how this block was actually serving me. You see as humans we only continue to do something if it is supporting us in reaching our goals in some way. For me, I discovered that telling myself this story “I don’t have enough time” was motivating me to do my work, complete my tasks for the days, weeks and months. It was serving me, however it was also leading me down the path of burnout, because it was fueling the ‘hungry ghost’ of never enough time.

When I was able to see first that this was a story keeping me blocked, and why it was still there, I was able to see how to get free of it, because the other part of me that wasn’t able to keep going and reminded me to take care of my health, also wanted the business to be a success.

Ultimately, their goal was the same, but I needed to find a new way to achieve what I wanted that wouldn’t burn me out. So, that’s what I did… It actually turned out to be not me having to find more time to do more things, but actually looking at all I was doing and learning to delegate more, and rely more on my team :)

FINAL THOUGHTS

I share this lesson with you, because I hope it sheds some insight on how you could have something blocking you from achieving your goals, but really it is a matter of looking deeper at the wisdom inside this block and seeing what it truly desires for you and how you can meet that desire but in a way that is going to be much more healthier and bring you much more happiness.

So your homework (if you are still with me), is to get still… look at where you are feeling blocked, then ask yourself, what story am I telling myself about this and then see what wisdom comes through. The beautiful thing is, you have everything you need inside of you.

I DID IT!! I spent 10 days SOLO on the little island of Waiheke, in NZ and all I can say is WOW… the depth of healing and transformation that occurred as a result was life changing!

No, it wasn’t a health retreat, no I didn’t do yoga everyday, in fact I drank wine almost daily, had one main meal a day with snacks either side, and for 5 of those 10 days I was up at 4am (completely disrupting my circadian rhythm)...

You may be wondering what on earth this has to do with wellness, or even health, but to be completely honest, this is where the real healing and magic happens. So if you stick around, I hope some of this magic will rub off on you!

MY FIRST SOLO TRIP

Let’s start at the beginning because it’s about to get vulnerable up in here…

I’ve invested in mentorship heavily for the last 4 - 5 years, having business coaches, health mentors and programs and courses that I have done on my own accord, at this stage totaling to over $100,000. And this year was NO different. I invested this time at a VIP level into a mastermind to help take my personal development and business to the next level.

One of the amazing bonuses of this mastermind was a five day mid-way retreat, and whilst circumstances didn’t permit me to be there LIVE, I still committed and showed up virtually. Which is what led me to booking solo time away to really dive deep into this transformational immersion.

You see the work I have now become certified in coaching, takes ‘coaching’ to an entirely new level that most people have never been exposed to, or are even aware of and I say that not to be arrogant, but to bring awareness to the different levels of the coaching industry and why I do what I do.

So, I headed off on a trip SOLO for the first time in my life. Bearing in mind, I was SH*T scared, I had never even stayed overnight ANYWHERE (not even my own home) alone before. I knew this was going to be a growth edge, but entirely what I needed, and it was!

Because of the time zone difference, it meant I was up at 4am every morning for 5 days to ensure I didn’t miss a beat and got to make the most out of it. I won’t drag this out by sharing all the ins and outs of days, but what I will share with you was the most powerful insight I got from not only the 5 day retreat but the remaining 5 days I spent by myself integrating and coming home to myself.

WHAT I LEARNED

Learn to love your own company - date yourself (because you are enough, simply as you are)!

I have never spent so much time on my own, and it was confronting, but also remarkably freeing. I couldn’t believe how much I loved my own company. After the retreat finished around 1/2pm most days I took myself out for a long lunch at one of the many beautiful vineyards on the island, I got to chat to the locals, do the wine tasting and simply sit and be present.

Sure I got a few stares and it felt slightly uncomfortable at first, but then I embraced it. I found comfort in the discomfort and it really stepped my confidence up to a whole new level. I realised prior to doing this, I had never given myself permission to show up fully and authentically MYSELF…

I wasn’t worried about others' judgments, I didn’t have to do anything, or be anything for anyone, I just got to be ME, for ME. Not who I thought people or society wanted me to be, not Sheree the coach or Sheree the nutritionist or Sheree the daughter/sister/partner… Just Sheree. And you know what SHE’S AWESOME!!

I got to fall in love with who I have grown up to be, the woman I look at in the mirror every day and feel proud to be her, and that is a gift I truly hope every human gets to experience. It was freeing to say the least, and EMPOWERING beyond measure.

So this is your reminder, to get comfortable in the uncomfortable, learn to be in your own company, and that you are ENOUGH, always!

3 Things To Stop Doing For Your Hormone Health

EEK! These are a NO-NO if you want balanced hormones… 

I know this may be triggering or even controversial, but hear me out

AVOIDE THESE MISTAKES

Skipping Breakfast

Skipping breakfast throws your blood sugars out of whack which leads to a not-so-great cortisol + insulin spike. When your cortisol (stress hormone spikes) this tells the body to prioritise your survival over your reproduction.

Your body is very clever and it isn’t going to want to bring a baby into the world when it thinks you’re struggling to survive as it is.

When this happens, it causes an imbalance in our other hormones like estrogen and progesterone that are needed for a happy healthy cycle because your body’s goal every month (whether you like it or not) is to fall pregnant.

This is a real issue because this survival response often affects ovulation in either diminishing its effectiveness or stopping it all together, and this is the point in your cycle (regardless of whether you want a baby or not), that you make the hormones needed to avoid period problems!

So please eat a high protein breakfast first thing in the morning! I’m taking eggs & bacon, steak and potatoes, a protein smoothie, whatever your taste, make sure the protein is high (at least 25g).

Go Keto or Avoid Carbs

As for the lack of carbs, these guys are amazing for calming the nervous system, and there isn’t a client I have worked with that didn’t need more support for their stress

Too little carbs also sends the body into survival mode and when we are just surviving, we aren’t thriving and therefore as a protection mechanism our body shuts down/reduces our reproductive functions.

Including… you guessed it, our sex hormones, much like skipping breakfast.

Avoiding carbs also lowers our bodies production of serotonin (our beautiful happiness hormone), and when this is low you can experience lower moods or even depressive states. Serotonin also has an amazing relationship with estrogen, so if your estrogen is dropping because the body isn’t thriving, your serotonin can drop too.

So have a balanced plate with about a fist of carbs at your main meals, just focus on making them nutritious ones like wholegrains, potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato, and quinoa.

Eat or Drink Out of Plastic

Finally, the liver loader that is plastic is a super easy switch out, think glass containers and stainless steel drink bottles instead! I personally love my @frankgreenoffical ceramic drink bottle if you’re looking for a recommendation.

Plastic contains xenoestrogens (estrogen mimicking substances) that load up your liver and can confuse the body into thinking it has too much estrogen (hello PMS).

As a result the liver then has to try and clear out these ‘fake hormones’ as well as any excess real hormones that the body is producing, on top of the other toxins like alcohol, medication, environmental pollution, hormones in your food etc.

The poor liver is overworked so if we can do something this simple to lighten the load like switching away from plastic the liver is going to thank you for it! Because unfortunately, it isn’t just BPA free that you need to look out for including BPS, BPAF and PET to name a few. This is where glass alternatives are far better for you and your body!

TAKE ACTION

See! Having balanced hormones doesn’t have to be hard! These are all things you should be able to implement now (also at minimal cost).

Your thyroid health is SO important for boosting and optimising your metabolism! ✔️

If you have trouble shifting weight, even when you’re eating well and exercising regularly, it could be that your thyroid is underactive 🥺

A lot of the women I work with have no idea that this is what’s contributing to the issue as their bloods have come back ‘normal’ 🙄

Not to mention 3 of the key nutrients (iodine, selenium and zinc) you need to have a healthy balanced thyroid are deficient in our soils 🪴 and if it’s not in the soil, it’s NOT in the food!

TOP 3 FOODS FOR THYROID HEALTH

  2.  Kelp Salt - 1 tsp per day of this spread across your meals gives you your recommended daily intake of iodine which is not only important for your thyroid health but also for your breast health too.
  3.  Eggs (zinc + iron) - having eggs for breakfast or as a snack throughout the day can help you increase the amount of zinc and iron you get into your diet, you need both of these nutrients for your thyroid to be functioning normally and I see so many women low in iron in particular that have trouble with their thyroid health, so eat your eggs!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Your thyroid needs selenium, iodine, iron and zinc to do its job properly, keep the thyroid hormones doing their thing, and so I am always a fan of prioritising getting our nutrients through foods as much as possible!

WHY DAILY BOWEL MOVEMENTS ARE SO IMPORTANT

One of the biggest issues I hear about from clients is irregular bowel movements, specifically constipation. 

Now, I know this isn’t fun to talk about or admit, but if you let this fester over time it can cause havoc in your body. 😱🥺

Think about it this way, your bowel movements 💩 are one of the ways your body eliminates toxins ❌- TOXINS (aka a substance that is harmful to your body)

If you aren’t eliminating these toxins through your bowel movements 💩 at least once a day you are essentially just letting them sit there ready to be reabsorbed. 😵

I like to think about it as a bus 🚌 (stool) travelling down a road (your intestine) with a bunch of passengers 👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏾 inside (the toxins)... If the bus is moving at a steady pace those passengers are going to get to their destination on time 🙌🏽🥳, however if the bus is stopped the passengers are able to get off the bus and go for a wander 😱👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏾

Passengers don’t jump out of a moving bus, and we don’t want your toxins going on a walkabout back into your bloodstream only to be stored in your body again. 🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️
Because when this happens, they wind up in a fat cell and become hard to move (therefore the body fat becomes hard to move)🤦🏼‍♀️

TIPS ON SUPPORTING MOTILITY

Is all of this making sense so far? 🙌🏽🥰

Your motility (bowels moving daily) is KEY 🔑 to your toxin excretion 👌🏽

So how do you support your motility?

-  Make sure you are drinking plenty of water (at least 2L per day) 💦

-  Eat a variety leafy green vegetables 🥬 - these should be in at least 2 of your main meals

-  Add some nourishing carbohydrates like sweet potato, potato🥔pumpkin or rice to your main meals to help bind the stool together so they are much easier to pass ✨

Almond Delight Smoothie Recipe

ALMOND DELIGHT SMOOTHIE RECIPE

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Blend Time: 1 minutes
Total Time: 6 minutes
Yields: 1 servings

Simple, easy, delicious breakfast or snack! Smoothies are a go-to in my household during my follicular and ovulation phase as a great way to pack in the nutrients whilst saving on cooking time!

This week’s recipe was taken directly out of the 4 week gut reset, so you know it is going to be super nourishing for your gut too!

INGREDIENTS

-  1 scoop vanilla protein powder (collagen/plant)
-  ½ banana
-  1 tbsp. almond butter
-  1 cup unsweetened coconut milk

Optional: add 1 tsp. of cacao powder for a chocolatey hit

METHOD

1. Blend all ingredients together in a smoothie and serve.

**Optional to make into SMOOTHIE BOWL
:
Add ½ frozen zucchini or ⅓ frozen avocado
Make sure the banana is frozen too
Top with a sprinkle of chia seeds and slivered almonds.

How To Cure IBS For Good

HOW TO CURE IBS FOR GOOD

First things first, you need to understand that IBS is a pretty crappy diagnosis, I mean, it literally stands for irritable bowel syndrome. And I dunno about you, but I want to know WHY on earth my bowel is irritated! 

Understanding what is actually happening underneath the surface level diagnosis that is ‘IBS’, or what I like to call, the IBS Iceberg can be hard and is often why the ‘solution’ is to just follow a low FODMAP diet (and that’s it).

As a holistic + clinical nutritionist this is not a long-term ‘solution’ that I am happy to put my clients on. In fact, it isn’t really a solution at all. 

Yes low FODMAPs can be super helpful, but it is even in the research that this isn’t a long-term fix. It might reduce the symptoms, but again we want to get to the root of the cause and in my expert opinion and first hand experience, I can tell you that it is normally one of these three things that lie below the surface of the IBS Iceberg: 

3 ROOT CAUSES OF IBS

1. Leaky Gut 

Leaky gut is another way of saying your intestine (gut) is permeable (has ‘gaps’) in it. This allows for particles of food and other toxins to seep through into your bloodstream (where it isn’t meant to be). 

So the body freaks out, thinks there is an invader present and puts the entire system in a state of inflammation… hello food intolerances and irregular bowel movements. 

These symptoms sound familiar?

2. SIBO

Short for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, now you may be wondering what on earth that means, especially because we are meant to have bacteria in our gut right? 

YES!

But not in our small intestine… You see, that is where all the absorption and digestion goes on, so the majority of our bacteria should be living in our large intestine. When it grows up searching for food and starts to overpopulate in the small intestine we start to see issues like chronic bloating, diarrhoea, smelly gas, burping and fatigue to name a few! 

Not fun right, and can be kind of embarrassing at times

3. Dysbiosis 

Now dysbiosis simply put, means there is an imbalance of good bacteria to bad bacteria in the gut. We are always going to have some bad guys, but the ratio needs to be heavily in favour of the good ones! 

Often clients come to me concerned that there is something living in their gut that shouldn’t be, and whilst this is true for some cases, the bigger issue is actually the lack of good gut bacteria. 

If we don’t have enough good guys, we reduce our defence in fighting off the bad guys! And then we have a bunch of space for the bad guys to invade. 

I think you’d agree, we really don’t want a hostile situation in our guts! So this balance needs to be restored! 

HEAL TO HEAL IBS FOR GOOD

These are the three main issues I see underneath the IBS ice-berg! 

Which is why the diagnosis IBS is not really supporting you in having a healthy gut right! We really have to support the good bacteria that are living inside of us!

The great news is, that it doesn’t have to take extensive testing and supplementation to reset your gut health and start to really nourish those beautiful bugs that help us thrive! 

The key thing to understand when it comes to healing your gut (or curing IBS for good), is that it isn’t a short-term solution. You are going to need to make changes to your diet and lifestyle, and some of those shifts may need to become more permanent to keep you healthy, others will only need to be around temporarily whilst the healing occurs. 

What you need to give yourself is time, on average it takes at least 12 weeks for the gut to do the deeper healing work, but you don’t have to wait that long to see results!

One of my clients saw a reduction in bloating after 4 days, another got her energy back and anxiety reduced in just 4 weeks!
