Training with Your Hormones: A Guide to Fat Loss and Better Recovery

TRAINING WITH YOUR HORMONES: A GUIDE TO FAT LOSS AND BETTER RECOVERY

16 / APRIL / 2025
SHEREE'S HEALTH DIARIES

🚨 STOP DOING THIS… If You Want to Lose Weight Without F*cking Up Your Hormones! 🚨

When it comes to fat loss, many women still think the more intense, the better. And while that might seem true on the surface, the real truth is that training against your hormones is one of the biggest mistakes you can make for long-term health and fat loss.

You’ve probably heard it before, but I’ll say it again: your hormones are constantly shifting throughout the month. This means the way your body responds to exercise changes based on where you are in your cycle.

So, if you're stuck in a cycle of pushing high-intensity workouts (like HIIT) all month long and not seeing the results you want, you could be doing more harm than good. It’s time to stop training like a man and start training with your hormones for optimal fat loss and better recovery. Here’s how:

WHEN NOT TO HIIT (Hint: It’s Not Always!)

🚫 Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5ish) – Absolutely NOT.
Let’s face it, your body is doing a lot during this phase. In fact, your hormones are at their lowest, and your energy is likely to be, too. This is the time your body is shedding the uterine lining, and the last thing it needs is the stress of high-intensity exercise.

Why?
During your period, estrogen and progesterone are low, which makes recovery harder, and inflammation can rise. Push yourself with HIIT at this point, and you’re not only setting yourself up for burnout but also risking added stress on your body that could leave you holding onto fat instead of burning it.

Instead, focus on gentle movement like walking, yoga, or Pilates. These activities promote blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support recovery without overloading your system. It’s all about honoring what your body needs during this time.

⚡ Follicular Phase (Days 6-14) – YES, THIS IS YOUR HIIT WINDOW!
When estrogen starts rising in the follicular phase, you’ll notice a boost in energy and faster recovery. This is when your body is primed for more intense exercise. Estrogen enhances your ability to burn fat, increases pain tolerance, and allows for better muscle repair, making it the perfect time to hit the sprints or ramp up your HIIT sessions.

Why?
Research shows that during this phase, your body’s insulin sensitivity is higher, meaning you’re better at utilizing energy and burning fat for fuel. Plus, your recovery is faster, so you can push your performance without feeling completely wiped out.

🚀 Ovulatory Phase (Around Day 13–19) – Still a Green Light!
This is the phase where your estrogen is peaking and testosterone is rising. Your body is in its power phase, and you're capable of crushing those strength-based HIIT sessions. This is when your body has peak energy levels, and you’ll see the best strength gains, so take full advantage.

Why?
Testosterone’s influence helps with muscle growth and strength, and estrogen keeps your joints and tendons flexible, making it a great time for exercises that involve explosive movement and power, like strength training and plyometrics. But be cautious—because of the increased joint laxity, you should be mindful of your form and avoid exercises that put too much strain on your joints.

⏳ Luteal Phase (Days 15–28) – Start Scaling Back
As you move into the luteal phase, progesterone starts rising, and your body’s energy demands change. Now, your body prefers steady-state movement over high-intensity efforts, as it needs to focus more on managing cortisol levels and supporting the body through the transition into your next period.

Why?
During the luteal phase, your metabolism speeds up slightly, and you may feel hungrier or more fatigued due to the increased progesterone. While HIIT is still possible, it’s not the best time to push yourself to the limit. Instead, focus on strength training, walking, and Pilates to keep your body moving without overloading it.

In the week leading up to your period, you may notice your energy dipping more, so listen to your body and switch to gentler, more restorative forms of exercise. This is a time for self-care, not pushing your body to exhaustion.

WHY HORMONE-ALIGNED TRAINING WORKS (and Why You Should Try It)

When you train in sync with your hormones, you support your body’s natural rhythms instead of fighting against them. By timing your workouts to match your cycle, you optimize your fat loss, energy levels, and recovery. Plus, you reduce the risk of burnout and injury.

Studies show that women who train in alignment with their hormonal fluctuations experience better fat loss, muscle recovery, and reduced inflammation. So, when you stop forcing your body to work against its natural rhythms, the results are clearer, faster, and more sustainable.

Time to Ditch the “All or Nothing” Mindset

It’s time to stop pushing yourself through intense workouts every single day of the month. Your body isn’t built for that kind of constant stress. Train with your hormones, not against them. Your body will thank you with better performance, quicker recovery, and—yes—fat loss that actually sticks.

If you're still stuck in a cycle of overtraining and not seeing results, it might be time to rethink your approach. Embrace the power of hormone-aligned training, and watch your energy, performance, and results soar.

Are you still pushing HIIT all cycle long? Let’s change that - join the FLC waitlist for a new way of female specific training coming soon!

Healing, Confidence & Owning My Power: What My Photoshoot Taught Me

HEALING, CONFIDENCE & OWNING MY POWER: WHAT MY PHOTOSHOOT TAUGHT ME

2 / APRIL / 2025
SHEREE'S HEALTH DIARIES

Getting my photoshoot photos back shocked me...

I looked at the woman staring back at me and she looks happy, healthy, confident, fit, and strong

I wasn't sitting there picking apart how I had cellulite on my legs, or how thick my thighs were, or if my abs were prominent enough

In fact... I just smiled

This photoshoot was a reflection of just how far I've come, of the light that's returned to my eyes, the glow and radiance that goes far deeper than just the skin

The woman in these photos is PROUD. EMPOWERED. CONFIDENT.

For years I battled self-worth, never feeling enough and a lot of that was initiated from comments made on my body in my teens and beyond.

"Your thighs are too fat"
"When is this going?" - he said grabbing my stomach
"Your biceps are too big"
"You're a disgrace to the industry" - a nutritionist commented after I'd put on body fat

Not to mention the voice in my own head...

"If I could just lose some weight, maybe then I'd be enough"

That poor girl, I've shed tears as her, and now tears for her, because she didn't understand that her worth had nothing to do with her looks

That her weight had nothing to do with how good she was at her job

And that she didn't have to have smaller thighs and a flat stomach for someone to love her or think she was sexy

To the woman in the photos, I'm so F*CKEN proud of you.

For every healthy battle you've faced head on
For every set back you've had in business
For every time your heart has been broken
For every moment you though you weren't enough

You persevered and you worked through it and now look at you

Seeing this woman showed me how far I've come mentally not just physically

Sure I am the sexiest, fittest and strongest I have ever been in my life (IMO)

But I am also a woman who knows her value, her worth and felt so damn confident from every angle

My body is my temple, but my mind had stood in the way from me treating it with the true level of respect it deserved

And I can safely say that is not the case now.

This woman not only looks incredible (yes I am owning it), but feels incredible. Has balanced hormones, a healthy gut, abundance of energy, a thriving business an incredible circle of friends and absolutely loves life

So I'm just taking a moment of gratitude for my beautiful body and all it's been through, a special thank you for being a vehicle for accelerating my learning in all areas of my life, as well as holding space for my eternal soul

I hope you know what your body is truly capable of and that your magic from within always shines through

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

When I’ve written personal notes in my blogs or newsletters they have been received with nothing but love and shared stories or support and for that I am so grateful for you, my community. So as this year comes to a close I wanted to write a little letter of reflection.

Normally at the end of the year I will write my top 10 lessons, and to be honest, each could be its own blog with the amount I could share, but this year I wanted to try something different, weaving in the reflection with the lessons, the stories and the memories.

This year has been one of tremendous learning and growth, both personally and professionally. It is the year I entered a new decade, and quite frankly has been one of the best years of my life.

I like to think of myself as quite an optimistic person. So regardless of the challenges I face, I do always look for the lessons, the silver linings, the positives that came out of the inner turmoil I may have gone through and whilst this year is no different in terms of the number of inner struggles that happened behind the scenes… I feel like something shifted in the way I handled them, or learnt to handle them and approached things with a new level of grace.

This year started on one of the biggest highs as my friend group and I managed to score tickets to Tomorrowland in Belgium (one of the biggest music festivals in the world). Which soon followed booking a month of travel around Europe with my brother and some of my best friends for my 30th birthday!

Yes, this year I hit the big 3-0. I moved house, made some incredible new friends and strengthened relationships with some of the best humans I could ask to have by my side. I got to the happiest and healthiest (and sexiest IMO) I have ever been - and did a photoshoot to capture this! Along with some deep inner healing far beyond gut health and hormones that I didn’t know I needed and I have acquired a level of self-love and acceptance I am so truly grateful for.

After a challenging move in Easter of this year, I moved into a home that has allowed me to expand in so many ways. For someone who is very much an ambivert, I did struggle being in solitude for too long. It seemed to bring up a lot of my fears that I hadn’t quite dealt with before. But this year called for a lot of inner work and uncomfortable situations that called me forward and I am so glad they did.

I had the pleasure this year of going back to working with clients in person, and whilst this only makes up about 10% of my working week, it has been so incredibly fun to see, squeeze (hug) and support my gorgeous clients IRL! As well as feeling like part of a bigger team again. Thank you Les Mills Howick - you’ve always been my extended family.

The biggest transformation happened however, during my travels. I was fortunate enough to have my (not-so-little), little brother as my travelling companion all around Europe for the month of July. We went from London to Greece, to Amsterdam, to Belgium and finished in Ibiza. Collecting friends and incredible memories along the way.

Just prior to this trip I learnt the lesson not to force things in a big way. I had HUGE plans in place, and woke up one morning, the week before I was due to fly and execute said plans with a LOUD voice in my head saying NO. Tears sprung to my eyes, and as much as it meant going against my own plans, I knew that this message, this voice was divine protection and redirection. I cannot tell you the relief I felt when I cancelled said plans and hopped on the plane to London in full surrender.

Whilst I honestly loved every single minute of my travels, yacht week in Greece was quite possibly the best week of my life. The people, the dancing, sailing on the Mediterranean sea. My heart was full, my eyes were opened and I truly felt like myself in ways I never have before. I personally think there’s something magical that happens when you travel. Or maybe it’s just that I give myself more permission to take up space, be me - loud, outgoing, authentic, free Sheree. I had this same experience in the US last year and it’s reminding me to be that full self no matter where I am in the world, or how uncomfortable that may feel.

Once I returned from Europe it was like something had shifted inside. I came back with a new lease on life, new focus in my business, and everything was falling into place beautifully, until it wasn’t. To cut a long story short - I got my heart broke - and whilst the details aren’t necessarily important here, what it did teach me was to pour into the people and relationships I have around me. This was one of my biggest lessons I could’ve learnt and as a result I have created some of the most beautiful friendships a girl could ask for. I have created a true sense of inner peace and joy regardless of any external circumstances or situations. I can honestly say I am the happiest I have ever been in my life and that is not dependent on anyone, or anything. Sure I have my ups and downs, but I know deep in my heart that I am in control of myself, my state, my mindset and how I choose to operate and live my life. And if it is disturbing my peace I am more than happy to let it go.

Which is how I got to focusing on simplifying to amplify. A process I am still deep in the weeds of executing, but the concept from the book ‘10X is Easier than 2X’ has been a game changer to say the least. Working on staying in my zone of genius and letting go and refining, letting go and refining and letting go and refining what’s working and what’s not on every single level has been incredibly empowering. If you haven’t read this book and love personal development, I cannot recommend it enough.

A massive reason I believe I have been able to execute so much of this and arrive at a state of such clarity and inner peace is because of the level of self-awareness curated over the years, and a willingness to do the work when things get hard - and believe me, they got and do get f*cken hard! This is said from a place of love, and compassion vs ego. It is my hope that it serves as a reminder that you are love, your essence is pure joy inside and your ability to smile at the littlest things as well as work through the largest pain or hurt is all down to a choice you make within yourself. We choose whether we shut down our heart and our emotions or keep it open even in the face of adversity. Something I deeply connect with in the book ‘The Untethered Soul’ in the later half of this year. We have that power, we have that gift, we have that choice within us - to be love.

So as I close out this letter I hope there have been some moments that really have resonated with you. Whether it is knowing when to trust and let go, or knowing when to keep showing up and doing the work. Whether it is that you are the creator of your reality and that includes your mindset as well as your community. Or that you hold the power and key to your peace… Know that I am here cheering you on. It is both my wish and my mission, that every single one of you knows they are inherently worthy, and lovable. No matter your past, or present, you hold everything you need inside of you to have an incredible future. Remember, your smile lights up the world and the world is a better place because you are in it.

Thank you for being here and walking this path with me, after all, we are all just guiding each other home 🩷

Much love always, in health and happiness,
Sheree xo

P.S. Check out some of the highlights from this year:

I got to meet one of my beautiful clients - from NZ - in person for the first time - at Tomorrowland of all places! Hi Liv👋... we may have been rather intoxicated for this one, but it’s a good laugh!

My dear client Sandy took me to an event called Oak & Ivy - we were accidentally twinning with our matching white blazers! Was such a beautiful evening

A few highlights from my Europe trip, photoshoot and adventures with friends this year… because we live WILDLY WELL around here! True wellness is about balance!

10 Lessons From 2022

MY 10 BIGGEST LESSONS FROM 2022

21 / DECEMBER / 2022
SHEREE'S HEALTH DIARIES

It’s become an annual thing for me to do each year… take some time to reflect on some of the biggest lessons I have learnt over the year (some I am still in the process of learning and fully embodying). And as always, I love sharing what I learn with you!

It is my hope in sharing that you take something away and are able to apply it to your life, even if it improves it by 5% that’s growth! I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the lessons you have learnt and what powerful insights or takeaways you’re taking with you into the new year.

Remember… Whatever those lessons are, meet yourself with love and grace, and know inevitably, they are all serving you and your highest good! So let’s dive in…

MY 10 LESSONS

#1: TRUST LIFE
The hardest, and biggest lesson of this year has been leaning into trust. And to be completely honest, I feel like I am only just scratching the surface on this one. It has been a really tough year this year for a number of reasons, in all areas of my life, from business, to personal and even my health.

But through it, I was reminded of what truly mattered, I was asked to look deeper within myself than ever before and ask the hard questions. It can be easy to ask yourself ‘why me’ and ‘what did I do wrong/to deserve this’ or even ‘why can’t this just work out’. Believe me, I feel the frustration in all of it, and I still get triggered (I’m only human right).

However, leaning into trust, as scary as it has been, has shown me that everything (yes, everything… and no, don’t roll your eyes at me), happens for a reason. It is still something I am coming to terms with on a daily basis, but the more it happens the more I lean into the discomfort, unpack it and then take the next most logical step forward. Life is far kinder when you are willing to explore from a place of empowerment than victimhood.

#2: THE UNIVERSE IS A FRIENDLY PLACE
To follow on from Trusting Life… this poem/quote from Albert Einstein says everything I could ever say and more about this lesson, so I thought I’d share it with you. (*note: you can replace Universe with anything that feels aligned for you - God/Source/Life)

"I think the most important question facing humanity is, ‘Is the universe a friendly place?’ This is the first and most basic question all people must answer for themselves."

For if we decide that the universe is an unfriendly place, then we will use our technology, our scientific discoveries and our natural resources to achieve safety and power by creating bigger walls to keep out the unfriendliness and bigger weapons to destroy all that which is unfriendly and I believe that we are getting to a place where technology is powerful enough that we may either completely isolate or destroy ourselves as well in this process.

"If we decide that the universe is neither friendly nor unfriendly and that God is essentially ‘playing dice with the universe’, then we are simply victims to the random toss of the dice and our lives have no real purpose or meaning.

"But if we decide that the universe is a friendly place, then we will use our technology, our scientific discoveries and our natural resources to create tools and models for understanding that universe. Because power and safety will come through understanding its workings and its motives."

"God does not play dice with the universe,"

--Albert Einstein

#3: REST IS SACRED
Burnout is not fun (and I got to revisit this old friend again this year)... as a wellness coach, I know the importance of rest from a physical level, and how much it supports a happy body and mind, but this year it struck a little differently.

I felt burnt out all the way to my core, the SOUL of my being actually felt tired. For a few months I felt stuck in a loop of darkness, not quite knowing how to make my way out, but persisting.

I know I am someone who constantly is looking for the ‘HOW’... how do I get myself out of this, how can I feel better quicker, how can I make sure I’m doing XYZ better. And this paralysed me this year, because I couldn’t figure out the HOW.

I had to stop, I had to rest, I had to get still, and in this stillness I found space, I found safety, I found a truer expression of myself and I am still practising it all. However, I am now far more intentional about creating the space to rest (without the guilt) and reconnect with my creative side, recharge my soul and of course… TRUST life in the process.

#4: IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO CREATE SAFETY IN YOUR BODY
This journey of discovering the sacredness of rest and trusting life, allowed me to realise just how unsafe I had been feeling in my own body. It was no wonder I was stuck in burnout, it was no wonder I couldn’t shift my frequency higher… my body didn’t feel safe.

Not only was I communicating this from a physical level (you know by not creating space and resting), but by telling myself stories, limitations, buying into misunderstandings about the things and people around me.

It is so easy to get lost in the world of our mind, and believe every thought we think is true, and if these thoughts don’t serve you they are only going to keep you trapped and feeling unsafe.

So I got curious, started digging deeper into my feelings of unsafety, where did they come from, where did my body learn this, what am I holding onto that I need to let go of, I did the inner work (and am still doing it) to help me get free and feel safe.

And whenever I notice those fears or thoughts pop up I remind myself to get still, offer myself reassurance and love, and be kind to myself. All along I had been looking for others to give this to me, when in reality this is what I needed to give it to myself.

#5: TAKE THE LEAP BEFORE YOU ARE READY & #6: IT’S OKAY NOT TO BE PERFECT
These two lessons go hand in hand… and I want to start by sharing a quote from Lisa Bilyeu’s book Radical Confidence “If you want to do big things, you have to — I repeat, you haaaaave to — get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I wish it weren’t true, but there’s no way around it.”
Which inspires lessons 5 & 6, because in my personal experience and belief system, everything you want is on the other side of fear. In fact, fear/anxiety are actually chemically the same in the body as excitement.

So instead of letting your fear of getting it ‘wrong’ or it not being ‘perfect’ paralyse you, channel that energy into excitement! You’d be amazed what will happen if you just put one foot in front of the other in the direction of where you want to go.

And you know what, if you fall, you can get right back up… it’s all here for our learning. And really, really, really question… is anything ever PERFECT?

#7: LEAN INTO YOUR INTUITION… FOLLOW YOUR GUT
To tie back into my lessons about creating space, and safety… it can be really hard to hear anything when there is too much background noise, or you never slow down enough to pause and listen right? (We are in agreement so far?)

Well then, it stands to reason that we could really struggle to hear our internal guidance (yes we all have it), our intuition if there is too much noise.

If our schedules are jam packed day to day, if we take little time to get creative, play and enjoy life, or we are constantly keeping ourselves playing small, that little voice of guidance is going to struggle to be heard.

However, that little friendly voice inside is STRONG and will continue to knock on your door until it is heard, it is just up to you if you are willing to slow down enough to listen

We have all had that feeling of butterflies in our tummies, or that little nagging that something just doesn’t feel right, only to be proven correct moments or months later, right?

Which just shows how powerful this inner guidance system really is… so take this as your sign to lean in (no matter how uncomfortable it may feel) and get curious on what it has to say.

The more I have created space and safety to hear this voice and allow it to guide me, the stronger, happier and healthier I have become, don’t take my word for it… trust your gut!

#8: YOUR MINDSET IS ESSENTIAL TO YOUR HEALING
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” ― Henry Ford
Whilst I’d love to just leave that quote to stand alone, because it truly is profound… I’m thinking some of you may want an explanation on just what on earth I (and Henry Ford) am on about…

Your mind can be utilised as your most powerful weapon, or tool to propel you forward in this life, and if you choose to buy into beliefs that keep you stuck then that is how you will stay… STUCK.

If you choose to use this tool however as the transformative asset in your life it can be, just watch it change!

Take me for example, earlier this year I discovered a whole host of health issues in my gut. Now if I had stayed stuck in my mind telling myself that I am never going to heal, that I am just going to keep getting worse, and nothing I do is working… What do you think would’ve happened?

I wouldn’t have healed and would still be feeling like sh*t!

What I did instead, was take action on my healing journey, and when the doubts popped up (oh because they do, and will), I acknowledged them and then shifted them. I kept reminding myself that I was healing, that my body is incredible, and I was going to finish this year happier and healthier than I have ever been.

And do you know what happened? I did, and I have!

Now you could argue that it’s because I did all the protocols and took all the supplements, and yes, you’re right, that plays a massive role. But don’t you think if I kept believing nothing was working that I would’ve even continued to show up and do it? Probably not…

This applies to EVERYTHING!! Don’t believe me… try it for yourself and see.

#9: NOTHING THAT IS MEANT FOR YOU WILL MISS YOU
I was reminded of this beautiful sentiment by my dear friend Samantha Ruberto only a few months ago. Whilst she had said it to me in the past, my ears hadn’t been quite ready to hear it.

It can be so easy to have regrets in life, or get stuck in the ‘what if’s’ or ‘if only’ … but let me share something with you, that’s only going to keep you limited and stuck too. The moment you do, you take yourself out of the present and into the past, away from the magic of the moment that is right in front of you.

When I fully leant into this (again, still learning), I noticed how much calmer I was, how much I trusted life more, how much easier I let things go. Another way to look at it is this… ‘rejection is God’s redirection’ (again use whatever word feels good for you there) but this was a quote I heard from Jamie Kern Lima on a podcast and it really stuck with me.

It all comes back to trusting life…

#10: YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR TIME, ENERGY, AND RELATIONSHIPS
A long time ago I was taught that you’ll only get out what you put in, and this is probably one of the most literal things I have taken and applied in my life when it comes to my business and my health.

However, it also caught me in a burnout loop of having to put in and sacrifice more time, more energy, and more time and more energy, because the more I put in the more I would get out right? I had trapped myself in a toxic cycle.

Yet, there was one area that stood out to me this year as a GIANT neon sign, an area that I wasn’t feeling held in, and I kept wondering why… my relationships.

I’m not going to lie, my work and career has been my #1 priority these past few years, and I haven’t been able to give my all to the people around me that I love the most, and that started to reflect and wonder why I was feeling left out and alone.

And I realised, I had been expecting people to show up for me, make the effort when I hadn’t been putting the time into reaching out first and nurturing them.

Look don’t get me wrong, I am a giver to a fault, and have had to work MASSIVELY on boundaries because of this *hello people pleasers anonymous* , but that was just it. I was there at people's time of need, or as an ear to listen, but the relationships weren’t deepening like I would’ve liked.

So, I took the principle from above, that you only get out what you put in, and started reaching out, making more of an effort, prioritising the relationships in my life over my work (most of the time haha).

And I noticed a massive shift, in myself, in the quality of friendships I was having. I became more confident in having harder conversations too. As a result, because I was happier, the time and energy I was spending on the business and work was of a higher quality… I realised that the quote wasn’t meaning that more is more, it actually came down to the quality and intention behind what I put in.

Which made me realise how much more intentional I could be, and how much control (in a healthy way), I had over my time, energy and relationships - GAME CHANGER!

FINAL THOUGHTS

So dear reader, if you’ve made it this far, I thank you and I hope that there is something within these lessons that resonates with you. These lessons come from my heart and are expressed with love, vulnerability and truth. I wish you every happiness in the years to come, and may 2023 hold every blessing you could imagine and more!

With love,
Sheree xo
